About

Join a cohort of people who want to work on the mitigation of large scale risks from Artificial Intelligence

The program

The ITAM Program on AI Risk supports exceptional early career individuals in their career exploration. Scholars will test their fit for academic and non-academic career paths and will become part of rich intellectual international communities.

Ideal candidates

We are looking for early career candidates and students from all over the world. We expect the majority of participants to be at the late undergraduate, Masters and Phd levels. You may also apply if you decided not to go to university at all.

We encourage people from
underrepresented backgrounds to apply;
no previous expertise in AI is required!

A truly global focus on AI risk

The advancement of sophisticated technologies has the potential to fundamentally reshape the course of human progress. With the emergence of technologies like ChatGPT, Bing Chat/Sydney, and GPT-4, and as as increasing number of prominent AI researchers have expressed their concerns, academics and policymakers are more open and motivated to taking AI and its risks seriously.

In some cases, this might translate to greater serious attention for misalignment risks and create opportunities for productive interventions.

AI risk is a global challenge that will affect everyone. The program aims at building a truly global community dedicated to reducing risks from transformative AI. We want to welcome and encourage these discussions in Latin America and other regions typically underrepresented in these crucial debates and decisions.

Program description

Throughout the program, fellows will pursue a project and will be paired with a mentor. Our staff and mentors will support fellows in the definition of the project scope. There will be regular meetings, seminars and Q&As with leading experts in the field.

We expect to tailor the mentorship experience to each fellow’s projects and we will do our best to get fellows the feedback that they need.

Outcomes will vary depending on the participant’s goals. Fellows can produce research reports, career decisions, websites, collaborations, among others. Candidates may also choose to learn a lot more about a particular topic in AI, such as interpretability research, global race dynamics, compute governance or liability law.
